During the last two years, power cuts and fluctuations in price have
underlined our dependence on energy to support our economy and way of
life. We need energy to sustain our activities at home and at work, to
power our vehicles and industry. In the face of climate change and
dwindling oil reserves in the UK, we need to take action to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions to minimise the effects of climate change. We
also need to generate energy from sustainable resources to maintain the
security of energy supply. Energy from renewable sources such as solar,
wind and hydro have a particular role to play because they are carbon
neutral, i.e. do not contribute to climate change and are continuously
regenerated. Hampshire County Council influences
sustainable energy policy on the national, regional and local levels.
The Council is one of the champions in the South East Region leading on
the implementation of the regional Energy Efficiency and Renewable
Energy Strategy. In Partnership with the Solent Local Authority
Support Programme we are working towards integrating sustainable energy
into planning and development
processes. Across the County Council a number of initiatives are
underway to address the way in which we generate and use energy. These
include promoting:
Energy efficiency
